Since the beginning of the cinema, apart from the role playing and the celebrities, the wardrobe has had its part in the emotion and thrill the characters have transmitted to their audience.
There are plenty of iconic movies that practically set the fashion trend throughout the decades, but some of them have simply transcended the times and still amaze us today.
Let’s take a look at our selection of elegance and style in 6 classic films that will help you add perfection to your fall wardrobe.
Charade, a 1963 movie starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, reveals us the classic yet modern vision of Givenchy, with a strong accent on suites paired with hats, gloves, and scarves. Amazing combinations of coats, trenches and dresses shows us why simplicity will always work. A beige ¾ length sleeve coat is still a great inspiration for many. A pair of black leather gloves perfectly complements this gorgeous coat covering a classic beige dress with a black belt.
Continuing the series of classy elegant ladies, Lauren Bacall is Designing Woman, a romantic comedy starring the beautiful lady next to Gregory Peck, in 1957. Marilla, Bacall’s character, simply can’t stop from changing designer clothes, determining her husband to exclaim one of the well-known line in film history: ” Believe me, this kid changed her clothes nine times a day!”. And indeed, Bacall is absolutely amazing in very elegant light grey suit perfectly adorned with a beret. As Audrey in Charade, she also prefers ¾ length sleeve coat with long leather gloves, a combination of great refinement.
Coming a little bit close to our times, we meet Rene Russo in Thomas Crown Affair (1999), next to another fashion and style icon, Pierce Brosnan.
This lady is gorgeous both wearing a classy camel beige coat and a sweater and a black leather coat over a stretch dress with a pair of rock star boots. She looks boyish and tough yet feminine and vulnerable. Michel Kors is the one designing most of the pieces in her wardrobe for this movie. We find these outfits spectacular, original and very autumnal.
Now, let’s get back in time with Marnie (1964), a special Hitchcock movie starring Tippi Hedren and Sean Connery, revealing a beautiful blonde of an extraordinary elegance. Her riding clothes, beige trousers, black coat and white shirt, may be the perfect outfit for a not so chilly autumn day. The warm grey coat, similar to the ladies before, Audrey and Lauren, has a perfect cut and furry accents on the ¾ sleeves. The coat is paired with the dress and gloves, both having the same color as the coat, which gives a note of complete elegance.
Elegance and style are also elements in The talented Mr. Ripley (1999), a movie with great landscapes and beautiful actors: Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Matt Damon. Both Cate and Gwyneth show us a stylish selection of dresses and suite. The light blue suit worn by Cate is brilliant, it perfectly goes with her blonde hair and it is enriched by a colored scarf and beige gloves.
The tourist (2010) is also an iconic fashion movie. Costume designer Colleen Atwood successfully made Angelina look… angelic. The vintage gray dress dates back 1950s and it was the only item in the movie that was not created especially for Jolie. “She literally walked into this dress. It was meant for her.” said Atwood. Another extraordinary outfit is the beige set of dress, shawl, gloves, purse and shoes, all of them greatly combined with golden earrings. Even this outfit may not seem autumnal due to the color, we are certain it can make a perfect match for a sunny September day.
It is a fact: fashion and movies have been created to meet and stay together forever. Designers will always get involved in wardrobes and this is something that will strongly contribute to both fashion and cinema.
Fashion and cinema… simply flirting since the beginning of the 20th century!
It is also in our best interest to have fashion depicted in movies as trends go along with our daily lives and we need inspiration, lessons and ideas from our beloved stars and characters. We want to see impeccable wardrobes that can literally transform us into elegant and stylish women.
We know that a great movie needs perfect cut costumes, beautiful women with their personal styles, jewelry, style, hats, purses, gloves, and anything fashion can bring through its unique glamour.
And we know we need these, too. ..
