If you’re like most people, you want people to like you. Maybe you’re really shy and have an incredibly difficult time putting yourself out there and meeting new people. Perhaps even the thoughts of being surrounded by strangers is enough to cause your heart rate to ramp up by about 100 beats per minute.
While this article isn’t meant to help you overcome your shyness, it can help you boost your charisma, and that’s one of the most important aspects to being likable. People want people to like them, and if you’re too shy, stand in the corner of the room, keep your head down, or don’t get engaged in conversations, you may come across as being rude, aloof, or bored.
Sure, none of those things are true, but that could very well be how others think about you. So let’s take some steps to help you boost your charisma and, as a result, your likability.
1. Show people how happy you are.
Charismatic people exude a level of joy the rest of us don’t seem to hold onto. That doesn’t mean they are happier people, but they have the tendency to smile, hold their chin up, press their shoulders back, and exude that level of joy.
You can practice this, too. Even if you’re not feeling like you’re on top of the world, think like you are, then act like it. When you exude a joy within you, others will respond to it. People want to be surrounded by people who are happy. It helps us all feel better about ourselves and life.
2. Stomp down on your insecurities.
Sure, you don’t think you’re worthy of thinking you’re on top of the world. Or you’re incredibly shy. Whatever the case, stomp down on those insecurities. Realize that we all have some type of insecurity. Every single one of us has those issues.
The difference is some people simply know how to hide them from others. When you learn to hide them, you’ll be in a much better position to show people how confident you are. Confident people always attract others to them.
3. Learn to tell stories.
Charismatic people have an incredible ability to tell stories. If you’re trying to lead people to take action, whatever action that happens to be, they are not going to do it just because you tell them to (unless they work for you). They want to be compelled to take action.
Stories are a great way to inspire that within people. Everyone can improve their ability to tell stories. It takes practice.
4. Connect to others on an emotional level.
Understand the challenges other people face. When you’re empathetic, you’re going to be more apt to connect on this level. As a result, you’re going to be much more likable and charismatic.
5. Learn to inspire others.
You want to be liked. Others want to feel inspired. When you begin developing a skillset that helps people believe they can accomplish their goals, when you’re encouraging and remain positive, even in the face of great challenges, you’ll come across as charismatic.
Everyone can be likable. For some, it will take practice. Following these tips will help you be more charismatic and that, my friend, will help you be more likable.
